By 1500 BC palace-based societies of Minoans and Mycenaeans were flourishing in the Aegean region, to be followed in 800 BC by Classical Greek city-states. During the 1st century BC the Roman empire brought a greater measure of political unity, but Germanic peoples overthrew the western provinces in the 5th century AD to found medieval kingdoms.
